It's a Titanic struggle...

HEXUS.E3 Each Titan is surrounded by impenetrable shields that can only be worn down by missile strikes from the ground. So you first need to take and hold the three missile bases on the map. Of course, the other team will be doing the same thing so in holding the bases you’re stopping them using the missiles on your own Titan.

Each base fires missiles at a quite a slow rate, so you’ll have to hang onto them for a while, during which time you’ll have to fight off the opposition. Once the shields are down you’ve then got to get onto the opposing Titan, battle your way through it’s defences, corridors and enemy troops until you reach the core where you can then destroy the ship by detonating it’s core. Sounds simple, huh?

Well, we played for a good 15 minutes or so and in that time we controlled all the bases, lost them all, hit a stalemate with one base each and the third hotly fought over before the opposition got a foothold and took down our shields. We respawned back in the mothership to have a massive gunfight reminiscent of Star Wars before repelling the borders and then taking and holding all three bases… yep, the battle surged back and forth the whole time.

Another new feature is the customisable soldier where you can blend skills and abilities together to create a soldier best suited to your playing style. Like sniping and healing? Then you’ll be able to play as a sniper/medic if you fancy. Also, the rewards system is now in real-time so if you pick up enough points but die, you can upgrade before you respawn in the same match and not have to wait.

In fact your soldier is pretty much customisable all over as you can select the kit he carries, the weaponry, armour and all the peripheral bits and bobs, leaving you to not just go with the default settings for that class and rank. If you find a weapon you favour for a lower rank but a side arm from a better rank, there’s nothing to stop you picking both.

The only reservation we have over Battlefield 2142 is whether there’s enough here to make it different from Battlefield 2 and therefore make it worth buying. The graphics have obviously had a total overhaul and there’s whole new areas and maps to play, but underneath it all it’s still a Battlefield game… so the question is, can EA entice us with what’s here or do we need more? Let’s see what happens as the game nears release.

That's certainly the big question. With so many games from EA being ‘just another one of the series’, let's hope this one is more than just that as it looks like it could be very fun to play!
I like the loooks of that game but it seems to be more of a mod than a new game….
It'll probably go much the same way as Vietnam did; fragmenting the userbase more than anything. Personally, I'd rather have BF2 fixed and optimised rather than another sequel. Meh.
*waits for bf2142 squeal*
