Gitex 2006 – Samsung - LCD, Plasma and Blu-ray
Samsung is pushing the boat out with its white goods range. Well, white goods isn’t really fair, it's white-coloured, but it’s not your average fridge-freezer.This 32in white flat-panel LCD TV was accompanied by the white version of Samsung’s quirky home cinema setup. As an aside, the Samsung PC booths didn’t bother with card-based descriptions, nope, it was digital photo frames all round. Blu-ray was in full force at Gitex, with Samsung just one of the manufacturers displaying its wares. Their first Blu-ray drive has already arrived in the UK, but the demo discs Samsung had running on 50in LCD screens allowed you to get a good view of the ‘apparent’ image quality difference. Just to let you know, the images were stationary so the image quality wasn't blurred by any bad camera skills.
As is the norm with trade shows nowadays, all of the manufacturers had different reasons to claim a ‘biggest’ prize. Samsung’s two claims to fame were the world’s largest LCD with backlight, coming in at 82”, along with the world’s first 102in plasma display. Funny that, with Panasonic already having unvieled a 103in model at this year's CES show.
