Some Origin users are reporting that they have received emails about a significant account branding change. The email says that "in the coming weeks your Origin Account will be renamed to an EA Account". Nothing else is expected to change about the electronic games distribution accounts.
Origin Account users are reassured of the following:
"Your Account identity, preferences, and order history will remain unchanged.
You will continue to use this account and the same login credentials to access all EA games, web sites, and services, including Origin."
The reasoning behind the change was not put forward to users in the brief email. In the coming weeks the changes will happen automatically – with no user intervention - and no features seem to be scheduled to be added or taken away from what users currently have.
Origin was launched in 2011 by EA and has over 50 million users. Let's hope the change for these millions can be implemented smoothly, without breaking links to PSN and Xbox Live Account linking, for example.
I have an Origin Account with several On The House games in it that I have collected over the last couple of years. However I have not received any emails or had any press releases come in from EA/Origin about the upcoming changes.
