Conclusion

Surface Book 2 has raised the bar for versatile laptop design and sets a new standard for other PC manufacturers to aspire to.

After a somewhat shaky start (excuse the pun), Microsoft's Surface Book has found its stride. The new and improved Book 2 retains all that was good about the original - including beautiful design, a versatile Clipboard and an excellent keyboard and trackpad - while introducing a handful of noteworthy enhancements.

The hinge and docking mechanism are sturdier than ever before, there's now an enticing 15in option, and upgrades under the hood include the choice of an 8th Gen quad-core Intel processor and up to GeForce GTX 1060 graphics.

It's a shame Microsoft hasn't gone all-in on USB Type-C - the lack of support for Thunderbolt 3 is surprise omission - and we'd like to see a Surface Pen included as standard, yet our gripes are few and far between. Take into account the gorgeous PixelSense display and chart-topping battery life, and you get pretty close to our interpretation of the ultimate laptop.

Bottom line: Surface Book 2 has raised the bar for versatile laptop design and sets a high standard for other PC manufacturers to aspire to.

Will the screen still fail quicker than a Russia Olympiad in a drugs test ?
My Surface Book 1 is still going strong and one of my favourite purchases ever. But the SB2 doesn't offer anything different for me to upgrade and Thunderbolt will be a must for my next purchase so I hope the SB3 offers it when the time comes to upgrade.
@Zhaoma: Two words… Quad and core (i7)
DDR3 in 2018? For a Ā£1.5k laptop? The HP elitebook trouncing it in the benchmarks is telling, as the only differences between the two are DDR4 and active cooling. The HP is cheaper too, and lighter.

Ryzen mobile in this would be interesting - quad core, bit lower battery life (but given the huge reserve available, it'll probably still be more than acceptable), and a lot more graphics oomph without resorting to a dGPU
The ultimate laptop

I can't picture myself running Crysis on this…
