Conclusion

..Gigabyte does well enough with the Gaming OC model, particularly if run in the Quiet BIOS mode.

The launch of GeForce RTX 3070 brings Ampere goodness to a larger number of gamers. Priced from £469, the GPU offers excellent QHD and decent UHD performance.

Yet it's the very presence of Nvidia's own Founders Edition board that makes any partner's card a tougher sell. Gigabyte does well enough with the Gaming OC model, particularly if run in the Quiet BIOS mode, but two factors conspire to take the shine off the package. The first is an extra 50W TDP for a three percent gain in framerate. The other is price, which at £540 is £70 more than the admittedly marginally slower FE, and that's assuming retailers have stock and stick to the SRP. That assumption is incorrect on the day of launch as the cheapest pre-order price is £575, further denting the value argument.

We're likely to see this situation repeat itself with other partner cards. The real-world asking fee has also become troublesome in the wake of rival AMD's recent RX 6800 announcement, so Gigabyte finds itself in an awkward spot through no real fault of its own.

Bottom line: This overclocked card makes sense at £499. Any higher and its price-to-performance metric becomes distinctly less appealing.

The Bad

Why do the tech press insist on quoting MRSP regarding the Ampere cards? NO ONE has actually been able to buy one at that price.
Nvidia are permanently OUT OF STOCK at that price.
Just like the Intel 10900k at its supposed £485 MRSP.
The tech press need to hold these companies to account over this, instead of blithely repeating marketing guff.

Another paper launch with unicorn pricing.
Grr, had an FE in my basket at Scan, changed the payment method and what do you know its gone!!
Not going to bother again, if summit gets to your basket and you are trying to pay it shouldnt be taken out.
ohmaheid

I agree, competition create a better product?

Just “release” a product which comes close, hoping to damage the impact of their product.

The problem is fanboys defending anti-consumer practices (usually with their wallets too) and the relevant bodies usually not having the powers or interest to intervene (in this case they likely haven't broken any laws per say)
I'm interested in the Gigabyte Eagle card, as it's the only one that fits in 2 expansion slots. The actual differences are hard to spot due to marketing BS from manufacturers. And review sites are never interested in / get given lower end SKUs.
