Everyone seems to be making power supply units these days, and at this rate it won't be long until we see 80 PLUS-rated units from the likes of Tesco.
Nonetheless, Swiss-based thermal specialist Arctic Cooling has decided to join the scene with its first power supply, the Fusion 550R.
The Fusion 550R, pictured below, carries the usual 80 PLUS certification, and offers an efficiency of at least 81 to 86 per cent. The ATX unit provides 550W of maximum output power, and uses a rubber-mounted ultra-quiet 80mm PWM fan with a controller allowing for speeds of 700rpm to 2,000rpm.
There are six-pin and eight-pin PCI-E connectors so it'll have CrossFire and SLI covered, but it's pretty much your run-of-the-mill PSU, right? Well, not entirely, Arctic Cooling has opted to redefine the PSU acronym, and in the case of the Fusion 550R, it no longer stands for Power Supply Unit.
No sir, the Fusion 550R is a "Payment Saving Unit". Arctic Cooling states that its "effective energy-use preserves nature and saves money." We're told that it'll save approximately €100 in electricity bills over a course of four years, making the Fusion 550R "a true Payment Saving Unit".
Well, that's one way to differentiate a power supply.
