Dell has released a 24-inch gaming monitor called the S2417DG. It describes the new gaming monitor as providing "premium visuals fit for a champion," and it does indeed offer some tempting technology. The S2417DG offers a WQHD resolution (2560 × 1440 pixels), with a variable refresh rate from 30Hz - 165Hz with Nvidia G-SYNC, plus a nippy 1 ms grey-to-grey response time.

Dell says that the Nvidia G-SYNC support, combined with the wide refresh rate support, will help you enjoy games without distorted graphics. "No screen tearing, no stuttering and no ghost images means there is nothing to get in the way of your performance," gushes the PC maker. Add to that the appeal of sharp high pixel density imagery provided by the display, and a rapid 1-millisecond panel response time. Furthermore, the S2417DG's ultrathin bezel lends itself to multi-monitor setups. A nice bonus is that Nvidia 3D Vision 3D glasses are supported.

As a gaming monitor, Dell has built in various gaming profiles to let users quickly set 'optimal' settings for the likes of RPG, FPS or RTS games. Other less-gaming centric features such as flicker-free display, DisplayPort 1.2a and HDMI 1.4 inputs, along with 4x USB 3.0 ports, plus a Tilt, pivot, swivel stand are all positives. The screen offers a 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350cd/m2 brightness, 170/160 viewing angles, 16.7 million colour depth, and a standard sRGB gamut.

At the time of writing the Dell S2417DG product page lacks an ordering facility and pricing info. However, with regard to pricing, TFT Central reports it will be marketed at US$570. It's interesting to compare this monitor with the budget priced FHD 27-inch Dell SE2717H IPS Freesync monitor we wrote about recently.

Oh, another monitor that seems just like all the others. I haven't been happy with a monitor since my last CRT.

Looking forward to somebody bringing out a 30" 21:9 120Hz 1440p VA (or OLED) screen - of course, under £500. I guess G/Free Sync would be nice but I've never had a problem living without it.

My 3 27“ 1440p displays are staying until OLED's affordable. That's going to be the next great improvement in visual quality for every day usage. All the current stuff seems to be focused on gaming not actually improving the static image quality.

I know OLEDs are hard to make, but classically if you're targeting a smaller display size you'll get a higher yield so the 5.5” OLEDs make sense, but skipping say 22-30" and going straight for 55+? Yeah that doesn't make sense.
27"+ 1440p IPS sub 4ms with freesync at under £300 and i am sold.
I made it as far as ‘23.8 inch TN panel’…

The general rule of thumb for Dell monitors stands true: If the model name doesn't start with a ‘U’, move along.

It's a good rule of thumb (and one I follow myself), but for something targeted specifically at gamers, TN panels aren't as bad as they used to be. And they are fast.
