Dell's Inspiron R family of 15in and 17in laptops have checked-in at the exclusive Sandy Bridge resort, for some much deserved R&R.

There's an array of vistas to enjoy thanks to the new SWITCH by Design Studio that offers freedom and flexibility to interchange laptop lids with a hop, skip and jump or, as Dell puts it, with a pop and click. Dell wants you to embrace your laptop as a fashion accessory and with 23 new options available now - tapping into inspirations from Bollywood, all the way to liberal colour vibrancy from the likes of OPI and (PRODUCT)RED - more options are to be unveiled soon.

Beauty aside, it's time to check the intelligence quotient of the refreshed line-up. CPU options begin with 2nd generation Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 models and support for up to 8GB of DDR3 memory. Based on the Intel HM67 powered platform, graphics duties are taken care of by Intel's HD 3000 solution, driving the 1,600x900 resolution on the 17in model, or 1,366x768 resolution on its 15in sibling.

Whilst both options ship with a 6-cell battery, Dell claims battery life of up to 13 hours 24 mins when using an optional 9-cell battery. This was derived using an Inspiron 15R model, kitted out with 3GB memory and an i5-2410M CPU, based upon the Mobile Mark 2007 battery life benchmark test.

Having visually arrested you with the smorgasbord of laptop lids, the Inspiron R features SRS Premium Audio, USB 3.0 support and weigh-ins begin at 2.65KG on the Inspiron 15R. Glittered with an HD capable webcam, Intel Wireless Display Technology and Dell's usual buffet of customisation options, the Inspiron 15R starts off at £479, including VAT and delivery, with the Inspiron 17R starting off at £529, including VAT and delivery. SWITCH by Design Studio laptop lids are expected to dazzle you at £29 each.

Surely you could put Linux on it yourself if you prefered?

but you would still have to pay for the windows license.

And that's the bit that grips me by the throat. I don't want to use windows, but I still have to pay for it, and M$ can count my machine in their list of “successes” even though from my point of view they have failed. Buggerem. I'd rather give Novatech 60 quid more for a white box laptop than pay Gates for more of his crapware.

any news on AMD Fusion Dell netbooks? HP have had theirs out for a while now and not a murmur yet.
