Dell is moving past Intel's Sandy Bridge hiccup by launching new versions of its high-end XPS 15 and XPS 17 (pictured) notebooks.

Both models feature updated hardware from Intel that isn't affected by the 700-million-dollar chipset issue, and Dell is also taking the opportunity to beef up its available configuration options.

The XPS 15, which is currently only available in the US ahead of a roll out to other regions in the coming weeks, now supports up to 8GB of DDR3 memory and a choice of either NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M or GeForce GT 540M graphics.

Moving up a notch, the XPS 17 is available to UK consumers now with prices starting at Ā£649 for a basic specification, and Dell's configuration options allow for up to 16GB of DDR3 memory and either GeForce GT 550M or GeForce GT 555M graphics.

Both systems provide a choice of second-generation Intel Core i3, i5 or i7 processors that'll work in tandem with NVIDIA Optimus technology, and there's a tantalising 1,920x1,080 display option available to both models. Opt for said panel and you'll find that the XPS 17 gets full support for NVIDIA 3D Vision, too.

A useful all-round bump in specification, but we were hoping for a sexier makeover now that the Adamo has been put to rest.

Disappointing graphics card selection.
Even the 555m is rubbish. Even the old 260m scores better.
graphics card selection is fine. what you on about? what do you expect? 480gtx kind of card on a laptop lol??
considering the likes of msi, asus, sager etc can do it for the same price… yeah!

the refreshed XPS 17's graphical power (550m) isn't even ahead of the previous XPS 17's! (445m)

460m, 480m and 485m should have been options rather than skipping to the 500 series just because it sounds newer..
fadeaway

trust me i looked long and hard for other laptops priced the same and there is next to none mate. asus, msi etc etc all price higher then these xps
MSI's GX660R can be found for around 900 quid nowadays I think.
Outdated i5 cpu, but the 5870m gpu is amazing. 6gb memory, 1tb 7,200rpm, full hd led display.
Same cost as the new XPS configured with extra memory and gpu upgrade.

Should be refreshed to include 6870 and new i7 sandy bridge but I reckon that will be too expensive.
