We've had a taste of HD 7970 waterblocks, but for anyone unwilling to put liquid near a Ā£400+ GPU, ARCTIC is today announcing a traditional air-cooled alternative.

Dubbed the Accelero Xtreme 7970, this high-end air cooler takes the triple-fan Accelero formula and applies it to a wide range of Radeon HD 7000-series GPUs, including the HD 7970 and HD 7950, as well as the yet-to-be-announced HD 7870 and HD 7850.

Armed with three 92mm PWM fans attached to an 84-fin heatsink and five 6mm copper heatpipes, the cooler touts a maximum cooling capacity of up to 300 Watts and claims to beat AMD's reference design all ends up.

According to ARCTIC, this 288mm-long, 653g beast will keep an overclocked Radeon HD 7970 running almost 34 per cent cooler than reference, while dropping noise levels by as much as 90 per cent.

Bold claims, but we won't know exactly how well it performs or how much it costs until it arrives in stores on January 31st.

But will they be able to make a silent (passive) one for the 7770s?
