SIGGRAPH 2003 - SAN DIEGO, CA - JULY 29, 2003 - NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced that it will demonstrate how to accelerate film production using partner tools running on the new, programmable NVIDIA Quadro® FX 3000 series of professional graphics solutions. SIGGRAPH attendees in the NVIDIA booth
(#2625) will have the ability to test drive new tools including a high dynamic range image playback system by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the industry's pre-eminent visual effects house whose recent work appeared in Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and The Hulk.
Frantic Films, with recent effects work on X2: X-Men United and The Italian Job will premiere its new fluid dynamics tool. IRIDAS will likewise show its new colour correction tool while Nexus Digital Studios and Zoic Studios, whose work appeared in the Fox Television series Firefly and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, will showcase a jointly developed previsualisation tool.
"Programmable NVIDIA graphics solutions enable a more interactive production workflow so visual effects artists are able to review their imagery more frequently," said Cliff Plumer, chief technology officer at ILM. "The more iterations they can have on a given shot, the better the end result will be."
Professional graphics solutions from NVIDIA are streamlining film production in conjunction with studio tools including:
* ILM's new high dynamic range image playback system, based on its own
OpenEXR file format, which allows artists to apply film look and exposure control on the fly using fragment shaders developed in Cg.
* The new Frantic Films fluid dynamics tool that makes liquid look
more realistic and true-to-life than previously possible.
* An IRIDAS SpeedGrade correction tool that enables artists to preview
effects with full Cg shader integration using real-time playback of film resolution frames at 2k and higher.
* The noncommercial previsualisation tool developed for SIGGRAPH by
Nexus Digital Studios, Zoic Studios and NVIDIA that streamlines file transfer from motion capture to 3D scanning and Alias' Maya® application.
"We were determined to create a fluid dynamics tool of the highest possible calibre," said Chris Bond, president of Frantic Films. "When NVIDIA came out with Cg and its programmable NVIDIA Quadro FX graphics, we had what we needed to build the best tool in the business. Professional graphics solutions from NVIDIA translate into performance, innovation and quality."
