Cheap and cheerful

Giant UK mobile operator Vodafone has launched its latest own-branded smartphone. The appropriately named Vodafone Smart is an Android 2.2 smartphone that has the main selling point of costing well under £100.

"More and more Vodafone customers are enjoying the benefits of smartphones which currently account for over 40 percent of the phones we sell in Europe," said Patrick Chomet, Vodafone group terminals director.

"Continuing to push the boundaries through our own-brand range, the Vodafone Smart is a new smartphone concept. It takes the higher end mobile internet experience and packages it for the mass market, its range of covers and accessories making it a fun fashion statement."

The Vodafone Smart is in fact made by Chinese telco giant Huawei. As you would expect from an entry-level smartphone, the chip isn't going to set the world on fire. In this case it's the pre-Snapdragon Qualcomm MSM7225, also found in the original HTC Wildfire. So this phone will probably be quite like the Huawei U8110.

It has all the usual Google products, 3G, a 2.8 inch capacitive touch screen, 2MP camera and a bunch of funky replaceable covers, which gives you an idea of the target demographic. Vodafone says it will be available in the UK by ‘early summer' but has only given price guidance in euros - €90. Here's an image and a vid.

… In this case it's the pre-Snapdragon Qualcomm MSM7225 …

As a slowish ARM11 design I doubt it's going to be qualified for flash compatibility: at which point it becomes no better than the 2 year old HTC Magic that vodafone used to do. I accept that won't be an issue for a lot of people, but somehow new Android devices without flash just seem a little anaemic to me…
Doesn't seem like too bad a deal, though it has pretty tough competition with the ZTE Blade (Orange San Francsco). I'm not too fussed with the lack of support for flash and youtube seems to work well enough on my Blade.

Most things seem fast enough though I do seem to get the odd lags/stutters with say angry birds. I just installed the Navfree stuff yesterday, routing seems ok but menus are a bit sluggish. I believe the 7225 in the Smart is a slower cpu so might be pushing it a little with the more demanding apps. The Google stuff always seems to be fairly nippy.

Still if it goes for about £70-£80 mark there is a lot of useful phone there.

I also challenge Huawei to come up with a camera that is as truly awful as the one in the ZTE!
Ill stick with my san fransisco for now

Assuming it's running at the recommended 528MHz maximum it will struggle with quite a few apps: thats' the same speed processor as my HTC Magic has and it can barely play Angry Birds at all, and Tux Rider is a slide show: 2-3fps. Acceptable for web browsing and email though, if that's all you want from a smartphone ;)
A nice phone to have. Not very expensive and the customized back covers have very attractive designs. the phone looks beautiful.
