Conclusion

Well, so far all I’ve done is praise Far Cry, so I think I should toss in a few niggles. The first, and worst, is that sometimes the game suffers from its own physics engine. Try crawling up to a tree in the prone position and then standing or crouching. You can’t… you have to move away and then change stance, which is annoying as you’re no longer up against the cover you wanted. Another gripe is the enemy’s ability to at times hear you from the other side of the map and then practically walk over you without knowing you’re there. There are points in the game where a fair degree of thinking is needed to make progress without dying multiple times, which makes for a slower paced game. This might not be to everyone’s taste, but for me the balance is just right. There are some genuinely scary moments in here too, reminiscent of Alien almost. Such as the first time you meet a trigen… then the first time you meet two trigens… in the dark.

So to sum up, Far Cry has it all. It’s a big game with a fair bit of replay value, even if you’ve done it once, there are plenty of other ways to try it. It is a linear game, but at the same time, it’s as open ended as it can be within the confines of giving you an enjoyable and entertaining gaming experience. I’ve blown my hard earned cash on this baby, so should you.
