Following news that Electronic Arts and Crytek's upcoming first person shooter, Crysis 2, has appeared on torrent sites for download, both companies have issued a statement.

A post on the official Crysis Blog takes a dig at the pirates involved and expresses EA and Crytek's disappointment at the leak.

"Crytek has been alerted that an early incomplete, unfinished build of Crysis 2 has appeared on Torrent sites. Crytek and EA are deeply disappointed by the news. We encourage fans to support the game and the development team by waiting and purchasing the final, polished game on March 22. Crysis 2 is still in development and promises to be the ultimate action blockbuster as the series’ signature Nanosuit lets you be the weapon as you defend NYC from an alien invasion. Piracy continues to damage the PC packaged goods market and the PC development community."

The statement seems to have caused quite a backlash from the PC community with many users attacking the two companies for not releasing a PC demo of the game.

One poster writes:

"if you would have stayed faithfull to your original fans, and release a pc demo, instead of xbox360 demo first! (jumping onto the console money making bandwagon!) shame on you EA... us pc gamer people stuck with this franchise from the start when the first two crysis games were pc only. what do you expect?..... you shafted your original fans."

There's also a theory doing the rounds that the leak might have been made from within Crytek itself.

You can read more about it on the official Crysis 2 blog.

Looks like an inside job. Sigh. Bloody pirates. Moronic posters.
I'll be paying for my copy, programmers need to eat too.
Already preordered - the build is borked in many ways, not least of all in that everything's locked at ‘medium’ and there are serious bugs in the code (so I read). I CBA to play or download it in that state and i've no idea why anyone else does (but then I don't understand people who watch ‘screeners’ captured via videocameras in cinemas either).

Sadly this is an internal fault - and somebody needs firing as a result!
I'd have thought nowadays there would be good ways to find the source of leaks? I suppose being internal rather than a review copy that it would be more difficult in this instance though?

Pop a tiny serial number somewhere on a texture, invisible to the naked eye but that could easily be seen in a viewer, et voila, your source! (yes, I know there are many problems with this thinking! :D)

I agree somewhat with the rants regarding PC demos, not that it's an excuse to leak but it's a fair point!

I'll be buying it (PC) if the reviews are good. If not then I'll pick it up in 6months time for a tenner :)

That's the approach I'm always taking, hard to justify paying the full price on the release day…
Wish I'd have pre-ordered for <£15 from the EA store that time though!
