The viral marketing website, alliwantforxmasisapsp.com, has already been uncovered as being designed by the marketing company Zipatoni, an American marketing company that provides clients, such as Sony with "zany" and "off-beat" ways to promote their products. Sony America have now come clean over the website and their comments suggest that they were rather embarrased by the whole affair.
Busted. Nailed. Snagged. As many of you have figured out (maybe our speech was a little too funky fresh???), Peter isn't a real hip-hop maven and this site was actually developed by Sony. Guess we were trying to be just a little too clever. From this point forward, we will just stick to making cool products, and use this site to give you nothing but the facts on the PSP.
Sony Computer Entertainment America
Although the site has been ridiculed for trying to create a hardcore fan boy site that was obviously fake, we do think Sony shouldn't be knocked for attempting to try something different. The main problem was that the idea executed poorly and, the well-known Sony marketing firm, Zipatoni, foolishly registered the domain in their own name. Generally, a viral marketing campaign involves a degree of stealth from the company involved, but on this occasion, Sony fell at the first hurdle...lesson learnt.
