Activision has revealed that its currently working on Guitar Hero Greatest Hits, which will bring together some of the best songs from all the games in the series thus far in full band format.

Due for release in North America in June, Guitar Hero Greatest Hits will consist of 48 master recordings from Guitar Hero, Guitar Hero II, Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock.

Activision has only confirmed the first eight tracks that have made the cut, which include "Them Bones" by Alice in Chains, Queen's "Killer Queen," "Nothin' But A Good Time" by Poison, Rage Against The Machine's "Killing in the Name," "I Wanna Rock" by Twisted Sister, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts's "I Love Rock N Roll," Heart's "Barracuda," and Guitar Hero III favorite Dragonforce's "Through the Fire and Flames!"

Game modes will include eight player online battle of the bands, the rockstar creator and the Guitar Hero music studio.

Players who have mastered the tracks on previous Guitar Hero games will have to re-master them all over again. Paul Gadbois, producer at Beenox, via IGN, explains why.

Guitar Hero has evolved a lot since the debut of the original Guitar Hero in 2005. Since then, we have seen improvements with the hammer-on, pull-off mechanics, sustained notes, three-note chords, the touch-sensitive slide bar, the addition of Bass Guitar tracks, just to name a few. Another major change for Guitar Hero was the transition from "cover tracks" to Master Tracks." The note tracks in these songs take all these features into account. All of the songs retain their original essence, but now are enhanced with the sound quality and accuracy of using master tracks, plus new twists to riffs, new solo challenges and a lot more… Anyone familiar with Guitar Hero will be able to master these and have a lot of fun while doing it.

A European release has yet to be confirmed.
