One of Pixar's best?
Following all the hype, I wanted to love Wall-E. I really did. He's often referred to as a Johny Five lookalike, only cuter. Though, I'd say he's more of a robotic E.T., both in terms of appearance and persona. Sadly, as much as I wanted it to be a family movie as memorable as Spielberg's classic, it fell far short of the mark.
There are genuinely stunning sequences, and Wall-E's initial interaction with EVE is a joy to behold. One particular scene, which involves the couple dancing around the stars, is absolutely dazzling.
I could easily love the characters that Pixar created this time around, but they're in need of a better movie to truly spark emotion. Wall-E has been dubbed by many as Pixar's best effort yet, but, I'd have to disagree. For both children and adults, Wall-E is a long way from Pixar's thoroughly enjoyable efforts such as Monsters Inc. or Toy Story.
Surprisingly, Wall-E isn't quite the barrel of laughs I'd anticipated. Indeed, the biggest laughs will most likely come from Pixar's traditional pre-movie slapstick short film, Presto.
Irrespective of the underlying messages serving as little more than an annoying distraction, Wall-E's love for EVE manages to keep the movie afloat. Had their been more of the romance, and less of the saving humanity from faceless corporations, this one could have been truly outstanding. As it stands, it's good, but should have been great.
