Over 50 million customers served, and counting
The music industry's digital revolution shows no signs of slowing as Apple has announced that its iTunes store has overtaken Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the US.
Based on data gathered by the NPD, Apple's store became the largest music retailer based on the amount of music sold during January and February 2008.
Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes said:
"We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world. We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone."
As it has been doing for a while now, Apple boasts the usual figures; over 50 million customers, over four billion songs and a catalogue of over six million songs.
Apple's iTunes now also provides feature-length movies for digital purchase. If in under five years, iTunes became the US' biggest music retailer, could it become the biggest movie retailer by 2013? Digital distribution still has some way to go, but there's no doubting its potential.
