PRESS RELEASE

Amsterdam, August 9, 2017 - It’s an exciting time for TV with OLED and QLED sharing the headlines as the future of screen technology but the key question remains: does one perform better than the other?

TP Vision - manufacturing, sales and marketing license for Philips TV – set that question as the challenge to an audience of enthusiasts at a recently held TV shootout at – the most appropriate of venues – BAFTA in London.

The audience was made up of 30 specialist AV readers, drawn at random having applied for the event through the leading audio video experts web community AV Forums (www.avforums.com). So, 30 people who readily knew their black level from their contrast.

In the end, the test result was clear cut.

Of the 30 people present, 29 expressed a clear preference for OLED over QLED with person scoring an overall draw.

OLED scored an outright performance win with an overall performance score of 89 out of 100 compared to QLEDs score of 66.

OLED also won all four individual categories of contrast, motion, sharpness and colour.

For contrast OLED scored 92 out of 100 to QLEDs 63,

For motion OLED scored 83 out of 100 to QLEDs 74.

For sharpness OLED scored 89 out of 100 to QLEDs 63

For colour OLED scored 90 out of 100 to QLEDS 64

Great efforts were taken to ensure a fair test.

Two sets were used: the new Philips 9002 55” OLED and the Samsung Q7F 55’ QLED both available with an original retail price of £2299.

Philips TV arranged the purchase of two of each set from retailers and both models were delivered un-opened on the day with the test sample then drawn at random.

The technical team from AV Forums then calibrated both of the sets being used.

Next, the identity of the two sets in the test was disguised so that the judging would be carried out ‘blind’ – the audience were not aware of either the brand or technology behind either set they were judging.

Philips PQ expert Danny Tack then ran a series of six TV test clips and movies from a dedicated media PC followed by three movie clips from a Samsung 4K blu-ray player – the average length of all content was approximately 2.5 minutes per clip.

The expert audience was asked to judge Set A and Set B by giving scores for contrast, motion, sharpness and colour for each clip plus then giving an overall performance rating..

Once the series of clips had been completed, the audience was asked to swap their seating position and the whole test was completed once again in an attempt to negate any influence from viewing angles.

Commenting on the test, TP Vision Director Product Strategy & Planning Danny Tack said: ‘We went out of our way to be as fair as possible with the test but there was still a very clear outcome. I think everybody agreed on the night that the QLED set was an excellent TV but the OLED was distinctly better in all measured categories. This is how we will distinguish the technologies in our own range’.
