Live and unleashed

Most tech journalists have probably watched a live stream of a press event online, but usually that involves special software or platforms that aren't available to everyone.

That's all set to change, if the news that YouTube has begun testing of a new live streaming service is anything to go by. Starting late yesterday, YouTube commenced a 48 hour limited trial in conjunction with four of its partners: Howcast, Next New Networks, Rocketboom and Young Hollywood.

The new platform empowers YouTube channels with live streaming. All you need is webcam or a video camera with a USB or FireWire connection. There are also live comments. It will only ever be available to YouTube partners - as opposed to individuals - in order to kep a lid on the logistics and, of course, ensure illegal stuff isn't broadcast.

There is a clever embedded thing from YouTube below, and there is a fair bit of potential behind this technology. Things like important announcements, breaking news and sports events are obviously best covered live. Bringing this technology to the best known web video platform would mean making this content available to everyone on multiple devices.
