At the Web 2.0 Summit, which kicked-off earlier this week in San Franscisco, one of the big stories has apparently been the incorporation of Twitter comments - or tweets - in key-word searches by search engines.

First Bing, Microsoft's search engine, announced the launch of a public beta of Bing Twitter, saying: "What if we indexed basically the whole public Twitter stream and made it available to customers?" It has also been reported that Microsoft is planning to integrate Facebook updates into Bing, but no date has yet been announced.

Before long, Marissa Mayer - VP of search products and user experience at Google - published a short blog post stating: "...we have reached an agreement with Twitter to include their updates in our search results." However, she added: "...we look forward to having a product that showcases how tweets can make search better in the coming months."

The thing is, with your average tweet taking seconds to write and with their being almost no barrier to entry, most key-word searches are going to yield potentially zillions of results, many of which will be stream-of-consciousness dribble or multiple re-tweets. The ability to do advanced searches of Twitter will be critical to making these useful services.
