New NAS

Distributor VIP Computers has revealed it will be offering certain QNAP network attached storage (NAS) products for the first time from the start of June.

As we saw with the unexpected alliance of Corsair and Computer 2000 last week, a symptom of this recession among distributors is diversification, and VIP is no exception. It seems VIP thinks the digital home market is now ready for more sophisticated pieces of kit.

"We've seen an explosion in the growth of NAS and QNAP doesn't have as broad awareness in the UK as it would like," said Mark Lynch, networking product manager at VIP, speaking exclusively to HEXUS.channel. "We've not done NAS before so we're excited about the possibilities."

We asked him what he thinks the most likely channel and end-user is likely to be. "E-tail will probably be the dominant channel but we see some consumer focusing retailers having a go too," he said. "It's going to be more the pro user who's into streaming music to Hi-Fis, etc. But one of the key features of QNAP is its user interface - it's very user-friendly."

There will initially be three SKUs on offer: the TS-119 (pictured), TS-219 and TS-409 Pro.
