As a hard drive, final thoughts and conclusion

Acting as a regular hard drive, we tasked it to run the default AS SSD sequential read/write test and to move a 3.35GB folder containing 2,087 files (Windows 8 USB install, incidentally) to-and-fro a Samsung 830 SSD in the host PC. We're comparing the Seagate's performance against the Corsair Voyager Air, a super-fast USB stick from Corsair, and a 2TB WD My Passport USB 3.0 external drive.

Absolute speed is largely governed by the quality of the drive inside. Seagate's 2.5in spinner provides over 100MB/s, for both sequential reads and writes, when used on a fresh drive.

Transferring a bunch of files does slow it down a little, but Seagate's performance is in-line with the Corsair Voyager Air's. Putting a real-world spin on it, we moved 100GB of large files from the PC in under 20 minutes.

Final thoughts and rating

The Seagate Wireless Plus 1TB is a USB 3.0-connected hard drive and wireless streaming device presented in a good-looking chassis. Easy to use with a modern tablet through an attractive, intuitive interface, it makes it easy to keep and track the bulk of your multimedia files on a portable drive.

We'd prefer it if Seagate allowed the user to upgrade the internal hard drive and offered an SD-card or USB slot for greater flexibility, while a few more options in the settings menu wouldn't go amiss.

But just like the Corsair Voyager Air, the £150 Seagate Wireless Plus is an easy-to-use, handy device for anyone who needs access to remote storage for their tablets or smartphones. And the fact that it's DLNA-compliant certainly helps, too.

The Good

Stylish looks
Very easy to use
DLNA-compliant
Can use web browser for PCs

The Bad

Could do with a few more options

Once the third-party firmware linked below is available, the Wireless Plus will be much more appealing (especially to owners of Android devices).

The review says that the wifi turns off when plugged into a USB port. What about when plugged into a USB port in a car? This could make for a good media server in the car for the kids to each stream movies from, but it will work best if always plugged in for power.
