Final thoughts and rating

If we had one word to describe the nascent Corsair Voyager Air, it would be 'useful'.

Corsair has entered the portable-storage market with an all-in-one device called the Voyager Air. Housing a 2.5in drive inside an enclosure with Ethernet, USB 3.0 and wireless support, paving the way for it being used as a network-attached box, external hard drive, and, primarily, on-the-go WiFi storage, the broad applicability makes the Voyager Air a fascinating product.

Working well enough in all three forms, this one-stop-shop solution is well-positioned as a multimedia hub for home and on the road. We like the simplicity of use, solid performance when wired via either Gigabit Ethernet or USB 3.0, and usefulness at streaming content when run through the built-in battery.

Shipping with plain Jane looks for the product and client interface, this is a commendable first-run entry into an emerging market. Writing out our wish list for a second-gen model, we'd like to see Corsair offer a user-installable hard drive and a slicker software interface, together with dual-band WiFi and the possibility of adding even more content by way of a USB port and/or SD card slot.

If we had one word to describe the nascent Corsair Voyager Air, it would be 'useful'. It's a single device that, while not perfect, is very handy for owners of mobile devices, especially non-storage-expandable Apple products, road warriors and anyone looking for a basic NAS. And if you happen to fit all three bills, so much the better.

The Good

Genuine multi-purpose device
Above-average battery life
Super-easy to use
Ethernet port

The Bad

App and product look basic

It's a shame that, at the outset, Corsair is not selling the VA as a barebones unit, where the user is able to add their own hard drive.

Indeed, I would like to have something like this that I can upgrade in the future.

Bit expensive for me but perhaps the next generation will lower the price or bring in the barebones option.
would be nice if it had a 2tb HDD and didn't cost a fortune. having a built in 3g dongle/mifi would have been pretty good too for those who have tables and no 3g. give it time and hopefully some cheap chinese clones will do all that
Do any of these kind of devices just kick out CIF shares rather than having to download and install proprietary apps?

According to the faqs this Voyager Air does:
Is the app required to use my Voyager Air with Android devices and Apple iOS devices?
No, the app is not required. You can use a standard SAMBA-based file browser utility (like “FileBrowser” for iOS or “ES File Explorer” for Android) to navigate your Voyager Air once you are connected.

My word that's ugly.
