Final thoughts and rating

We're running out of superlatives for SandForce-powered SATA 6Gbps SSDs. Like so many before it, SanDisk's Extreme series drive is awesomely quick - put it in any modern-day PC, and if you're coming from a hard disk, you won't know what's hit you.

The Extreme SSD is fast, there's no doubt about it, but it's also one of many drives equipped with the same SandForce SF-2281 controller and users with different needs may be better served by alternative solutions. Kingston's SSDNow V+200 is available with a better bundle, Intel's 520 Series comes with a longer five-year warranty, and some of the elder statesmen now offer similar performance at a lower price.

But SanDisk's Extreme SSD is a unique proposition that delivers the performance of a SandForce controller and high-speed Toggle Mode NAND at an affordable price. And for this reason alone, it's certain to become a popular choice among 'Extreme' users.

Bottom line: Switch to an SSD as speedy as this and your days of making a cuppa while waiting for the PC to boot will be long gone.

The Good

Capable of sequential speeds in excess of 500MB/s
Toggle Mode NAND delivers strong performance across data types
Competitive pricing

The Bad

Doesn't include a 3.5in adaptor or disk migration software

Good review but can I ask again, would it be possible to update your M4 to the current firmware (c009) ? It just makes it look alot worse in comparison to other drives, for example my 128gb M4 with 009 firmware scores 541MB/s read and 205 MB/s write in atto… that puts much higher in the group and performance is there even at 0.5, scored 44032/36352(write/read) almost double that of the sandisk!.

Other than that though, good review and another SF drive to join the pack :P
There's one thing I'm finding a little confusing about SSDs at the moment.. Why are 120GB drives better value than 240GB ones?

Is there more to making a 240GB one than just adding more NAND chips?
I didnt even notice that bit :P, odd that the pricing is substantially more on the 240! It should be the other way round… i know the 512GB M4 was on sale at amazon or something last week for a cheap price of ~ £472 (works out 0.9228125 per gig!) theres also the 128gb at £120 and the 64GB at £68, very cheap £1 mark now!.
The 120GB Corsair Force Series 3 is £104.99 on eBuyer atm.. Unbelievable price!!

87p/GB!!
Sandforce + Asynchronous NAND = slower
Id rather have the M4 but if you need to spend the least then yeah thats a sweet deal
