Conclusion

Best thought of as the Black SN750 series augmented by much better endurance.

WD bolsters its Red series of NAS-optimised SSDs by releasing the SN700 series. Using trickle-down technology from the consumer side, Red gets a shot in the arm by switching out to the NVMe protocol alongside tasty sequential and random performance.

Best thought of as the Black SN750 series augmented by much better endurance, the latest WD Red has plenty going for it. Up to 4TB capacity, solid performance and excellent longevity make it an ideal fit for a high-end PC or entry-level workstation, on top of its NAS designation.

WD does charge a healthy premium for this new series - the 1TB model is up some 30 per cent over the regular SN750 - but like much in life, you get what you pay for. Bottom line, a solid, well-thought-out addition to the WD Red line-up.

This is aimed at WD more than Hexus but a review without pricing can never be complete. The extra endurance is nice, and may be worth a 20% oremium
If they're charging an 80% that's a different prospect.

The above percentages are notional to illustrate my point BTW.
Do we trust WD not to send a decent spec drive to a reviewer and then not switch components by the time you can actually buy them, you know, because WD….

Hi,

We now have the pricing in dollars, which we received at exactly the same time this review went live. Chasing down the UK pricing as I write this.
The Samsung 980 PRO 1TB was £133 yesterday so this already looks DOA.

The stand out difference is endurance:
980 Pro 1TB = 600 TBW
Vs
Red SN700 1TB = 2,000 TBW
