Final thoughts and rating

...if you want a supply that's solid in every area and backed by a seven-year warranty, the Corsair AX760 really needs to be on a rather short shortlist.

Intense competition has forced PSU manufacturers to raise their game throughout 2012. Looking with particular focus on the premium end of the market, characterised by 80 PLUS Platinum supplies outfitted with fully-modular connections, there's little to choose between a raft of PSUs on a purely technical level. Differentiation in this space has more to do with manufacturer-specific features than all-out performance.

Corsair recognises there's definitely a market for high-quality supplies that ship at mainstream wattages. The AX760 is a case in point. Powered by an established Seasonic platform and strong in every area, from presentation, features and performance, it's a worthy successor to the AX750 launched a while ago.

We'd encourage Corsair to investigate waterfalling the same technology to 550W and 650W models, thereby offering top-notch performance at lower price points, yet do understand that the job of maintaining across-the-board excellence becomes harder as capacity is reduced.

Reiterating what we've said in the past, you don't need a supply of this quality for an everyday build - lesser PSUs are more than good enough for mainstream PCs - but if you want a supply that's good in every area and backed by a seven-year warranty, the Corsair AX760 really needs to be on a rather short shortlist.

The Good

Excellent all-round performance
Sensible cabling
Silent operation in mainstream PCs

The Bad

Not much cheaper than the best-in-class AX760i

Doesn't need to be any bigger for a 90+ efficiency PSU.
