Conclusion

...more forward-looking than most and delivers a well-rounded feature set that few competitors are currently able to match.

With rivals Qnap and Synology typically hogging the NAS limelight, Asustor needs a product that stands out from the crowd. The Nimbustor 4 AS5304T, priced at Ā£440, does exactly that.

Outfitted with a quad-core Intel Celeron J4105 processor, DDR4 memory, HDMI 2.0a and a pair of 2.5GbE network ports, the four-bay unit is more forward-looking than most and delivers a well-rounded feature set that few competitors are currently able to match.

A polished ADM operating system helps make the most of the diverse feature set, and the real-world performance uplift of 2.5GbE makes Nimbustor 4 feel like a genuine step in the right direction. Granted, you will need a multi-Gigabit switch and compatible clients in order to take full advantage, yet while 10GbE continues to be viewed as a luxury, we feel it is about time 2.5GbE became the absolute minimum.

Bottom line: The AS5304T serves not only as an attractive entry point into the world of NAS, but also as a useful upgrade for those wanting to move away from an older, less capable unit.

I have a (very) old Asustor As-304T model filled with 4x4Tb WD Red discs.
The only thing that I would complain about is its noise. It is just too noisy.
Otherwise, love it. Software especially.
Which is bad, as that means I can not keep it in the living room, connected to the TV (as it should be).
Building DIY NAS in HTPC chassis now to replace it.
The real kicker would be if Asustor (or Qnap or ..“any NAS maker”) were selling their OS so that we can install on more common hardware. That would rock. because ADM has exactly ALL functionality that I want.

PS: Yes I know about FreeNAS (not for me) or OMV 4(again not completely for me).

Like I say I haven't tried it but others seem to rate it from what I can see.

Yes, I saw that one too. It seems it is not that easy to install it. Especially as I am on an AMD APU (2500G). And honestly, not enough free time to sit down and work on it. But that would be great if it could work.
Will fit nice on the 10gbit port on my motherboard,,,,,,, BUT ! I cant see what i should use all that storage for, my porn collection are a modest 736 GB
