Conclusion

...Nvidia has reached a point of convergence where the gap between mobile and desktop GPUs has all but disappeared.

Nvidia looks set to strengthen its already dominant position in high-end laptops with the launch of the GeForce GTX 1080, GTX 1070 and GTX 1060 mobile GPUs.

Carrying the same branding as their desktop counterparts and promising similar levels of performance, the trio of new additions are to become the GPUs of choice for a wide range of premium laptops. Nvidia already claims design wins from a long line of partners that includes Acer, Alienware, Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte and MSI, to name but a few, and we can expect more to join the list as we approach the holiday season.

Our initial examination of the GeForce GTX 1070, featured in a pre-production Asus ROG G752VS, reveals performance to be far superior to any previous-generation laptop GPU. Such supremacy is likely to be reflected in retail pricing - we don't anticipate GTX 1070 laptops to be widely available for less than Ā£1,500 - but the key takeaway here is that Nvidia has reached a point of convergence where the gap between mobile and desktop GPUs has all but disappeared.

GTX 1070, in a mobile MXM form factor, and with an additional SM unit to boot, offers all of the goodness of its desktop counterpart and arrives as a prime choice for any high-performance laptop. Willing to spend big for maximum mobile gaming thrills? A GTX 10-series laptop, with a 120Hz G-Sync display, ought to be on your shopping list.

That is impressive - over longer sessions does the boost stay consistent out of interest??

Yes - 97.7% as per page 6 of the review ;)
Are there any gaming battery life results?

I saw elsewhere a review that got 85 minutes on a 1060 laptop in Witcher 3, was wondering how this 1070 compared.

9lbs though … tbh it's a lot of weight and money for a laptop - you really will need to have very specific needs for gaming for this to be viable over a reasonable desktop system - relocatable SFF with handle for example.
What a beast. Yes it's big and heavy but still portable and with a GPU like that it does compete with a desktop on performance.

it's a shame you can't use the integrated GPU as the power saved would make it more useful for other tasks when using it on the go :(.

Plus monitor, keyboard and mouse? ;)

Desktops take up a lot more space to use, and are a lot harder to carry around, than a laptop. You'd basically need a backpack just for peripherals, and then you'd need to carry your base unit around too. Or you can chuck everything in the backpack. A lot of people value that kind of convenience. Plus there's the bragging rights of turning up at a mate's house and pulling out a laptop that's faster than his desktop, of course
