Conclusion

...a better display and dual-channel memory is all it would take to propel this machine from reasonable to exemplary.

We've come full circle, and what was the question? Ah, yes, can one of industry's most recognisable brands nail the gaming laptop? The answer is almost, but not quite.

At £875, the Asus Republic of Gamers GL552VW promises plenty but falls short in one or two key areas. The laptop looks good, build quality is decent, connectivity is excellent, battery life ain't bad and a Core i7-6700HQ processor and GeForce GTX 960M GPU combine to deliver respectable gaming thrills at the native 1080p resolution.

The price is right, and when you factor in a solid keyboard and trackpad, 256GB of solid-state storage plus the versatility of a user-removable battery, you have the makings of a competent all-rounder. The caveat, and it's a doozy, is that the TN display panel is a disappointment. The component that should bring the GL552VW to life with dazzling visuals delivers muted colour, lacklustre contrast and weak viewing angles that have little place on a modern gaming laptop.

A shame, really, as a better display and dual-channel memory is all it would take to propel this machine from reasonable to exemplary. A v2 revision could right the aforementioned wrongs, but as it stands, the GL552VW isn't the finished article.

The Good

The Bad
Looks like a proper gaming laptop
Quad-core Intel Skylake CPU
Solid 1080p gaming credentials
Good connectivity options
Removeable battery

Disappointing TN display
Single-channel memory
SSD is basic by today's standards

Similar to he Acer Aspire V Nitro Black I got back in Septenger for £799.
That's a Skylake i5, 960m gt, 8gb dd4 dual channel and a 1tb drive with 256 PCIe ssd.
More than happy with it.

Keyboards almost identical too. Battery is not removable but it's a lithium cell which I prefer anyway.
Gaming laptops should stop looking “gamery” and they should aim for more subtle looks.
Dell Inspiron 7559:

Same processor / Same GPU but with 4Gb DDR5 instead of 2Gb / 4k IPS Display / 74Whr Battery instead of 48Whr / Less “gamery” design / 1Tb mechanical drive (with space for SATA3 M2 SSD drive, easily accessible by removing 1 philips screw), 8Gb DDR3 1 stick, 2 bays available

Bought for £820 last October (currently £899 online)…so better GPU / better display / better battery / more subtle design / easy upgrades to RAM and additional SSD if desired.

Or you can just the better GPU and battery for £749 in the base 7559 model, this seems overpriced in comparison.
Yeah but you don't have a dell badge in your face for the whole time you own it lol :)
Not a bad thing, plenty of things Dell do very well.
