It's hard not to feel lured by today's premium laptops - who wouldn't want a Surface Book? - but when funds are limited there is still plenty of value to be found further down the ladder.

Serving as a good example of what £600 can buy, PC Specialist's Lafité II offers Ultrabook attributes at a regular laptop price. Slim, light and portable, the system delivers a highly responsive Windows 10 experience and does so in a sleek package that doesn't cost the Earth.

There are of course trade-offs, and would-be buyers should be aware of the sluggish trackpad, the noisy fan profile and the laboriously slow-to-recharge battery, but there's plenty of promise, too. A sixth-generation Core i7 CPU delivers a welcome injection of speed, the 250GB Samsung 850 Evo SSD is both quick and reasonably roomy, and the full-HD IPS display is a welcome addition at this price point.

Factor in the backlit keyboard, over seven hours battery life, Wireless AC connectivity and USB Type-C, and you have yourself an attractive laptop well suited to everyday computing.
