Conclusion

...mini-ITX will become increasingly popular among performance users looking to trade-in their traditional towers in favour of something more refined.

There's never been a better time to downsize your rig. The modern-day CPU's agglomeration of previously on-board components has allowed motherboard manufacturers to create mini-ITX platforms that are nearly as potent as their ATX counterparts.

Factor in the reduced TDP of today's CPUs and GPUs, along with small, silent SSDs, and there's every reason for system builders to create high-performance PCs that are both quiet and compact.

HEXUS believes that mini-ITX will become increasingly popular among performance users looking to trade-in their traditional towers in favour of something more refined, and Lian Li's PC-Q27 is certainly that. The petite aluminium frame shows quality workmanship throughout, and the logical layout allows builders to keep using most of their full-size components.

However it's this devotion to legacy components that is holding the PC-Q27 back. Mini-ITX holds more promise than ever before, but if the form factor is to realise its full potential, chassis manufacturers may need to look past redundant optical drives and large ATX power supplies in favour of solutions that are smaller still.

The Good

Sleek, attractive exterior
Solid aluminium construction
Anti-vibration hard-disk mounts
Three storage bays

The Bad

Single expansion slot
Front I/O lacks headphone port
Optical bay redundant for some

PSU size is definitely an issue as is cable length, currently only Silverstone offer short PSU cables. Would love to see Corsair offering a smaller PSU with shorter cabling.
single expansion slot is somewhat retarded, whats the best single slot card you can get at the moment?
Biscuit: This is a mini-itx case. Mini itx boards only come with a single expansion slot. stick a decent GPU in the expansion slot, I think ASUS are doing a short 670 specifically for mini-itx boards.

Lian Li have been running with variants of this design for a while and they all have the same flaws: cable clutter and lack of air flow
Single width expansion slot he means.

… whats the best single slot card you can get at the moment?

There's plenty of cards - right up to 7970s - with all the display outputs on a single row, which is technically all you need to fit the card into a single expansion slot, although given the position of the vents on the case an open frame cooler would be a lot better than a blower design.

If you're looking for an actual single slot card with a single slot cooler though, you're limited to 7750/GTX650 kind of performance. Acceptable but not earth-shattering.
