Considering that this is supposed to be the year of the tablet, it's disappointing that we've made it to autumn with only one device making a real splash.

Many manufacturers are promising to launch Windows and Android tablets in the coming months though, including MSI.  One of the company's upcoming devices, the Wind Pad 100, has recently been posing for press photos, some of which have been leaked to Netbook News.

The tablet, which we first saw on display at Computex a few months ago, features an Atom Z530 behind its 10in touchscreen and runs Windows 7 Home Premium.  Of course, MSI will be loading the Wind Pad with a custom touch interface that should make getting around with your fingers a little easier.

While the pictures don't give any more details on the actual device, this is the first time that we're seeing the tablet's dock.  The base features HDMI, VGA, an Ethernet connection and two USB ports, as well as audio in and out and a power connector.  This nicely expands the default connectivity options, with wired networking and VGA being unique to the dock.

We're not entirely convinced that Windows 7 is sufficiently usable in the absence of a keyboard and mouse, but there's still no mention of a release date so it seems MSI will be taking its time to refine its touch-focused overlay.

I know what you guys are saying about the lack of available tablets considering this is supposed to be “the year of the tablet”, but if you compare this to the flood of netbooks we say a couple of years ago, these tablets being shown are all a lot more polished and look a lot better than any of the first generation netbooks. They were designed to be small and cheap, these tablets are designed to be slick and cool. That's a lot harder to do, especially when all these manufacturers are adding their own interface software on top.

As for the Windpad [sic] itself, it would be pretty OTT, but this would make a really lovely digital photo frame :)

Enough grunt and flexibility (you can do anything on Windows) to have all your photos pulled off your server and displayed nicely with a great touch interface. Then it can go into random mode while docked. Could also be used as a giant remote screen for a media setup and home automation.

You wouldn't need to care too much about battery in this usage scenario, as it would mainly be docked.
Hoping for a decent res and CPU but it doesn't seem likely. 1440x900 and a dual core CULV CPU would be nice, great for a Paint.NET pad…
Oddly enough, looking at the size of the Win 7 task bar, a decent res doesn't seem out of the question.. :)

Edit: Scratch that, just counted the Recycle Bins down and get (very roughly) about 60% of what I get on my 1080p screen. It'll be lucky to have a 720p screen and is more likely to be 1024x600 or thereabouts :(
