Synology has updated its NAS catalogue with the introduction of the DiskStation DS415play. Following on from the two-bay DS214play, this four-bay media-focussed model supports hardware-accelerated video transcoding on the fly. This means it can it can deliver 1080p content to virtually any streaming device without worrying about media-format support.
The company says the DS415play is able to output multiple concurrent streams to devices such as a smart TV, Android TV box, network media player, tablets and phones, Windows PC, Mac, and Linux computer. DS415play runs on Synology's latest DiskStation Manager 5 software that we've come to admire.
Inside, an Intel Atom 1.6GHz dual-core CPU is supported by 1GB of DDR3 RAM. Synology quotes maximum transfer speeds of 112.45MB/s read and 101.21MB/s write, achieved under a RAID5 configuration in Windows.
The DLNA-compliant box supports 24TB of storage, has two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports for external storage connections and peripherals, and is cooled by two 92mm fans on the rear. Maximum power consumption is quoted as 42W.
"With four drive bays, the DS415play is built on the popularity of its little brother, DS214play, with up to 24TB of large storage space to make it even more appealing to media fanatics," added Michael Wang, Product Manager at Synology Inc.
We expect the DS415play to be available for approximately £400 in the coming weeks.
