Kingston may have been the first manufacturer to unveil a 256GB USB Flash drive - the DataTraveler 300 launched back in July 2009 - but whilst others continue to play catch up, Kingston is moving on and introducing its 256GB successor - the DataTraveler 310.

The second-generation drive, pictured above, is a tad quicker than the original DataTraveler 300, offering read and write speeds of 25MB/s and 12MB/s, respectively. It'll still take some time to fill the entire drive, of course, but that's the price you pay for a USB 2.0 drive capable of storing over 50,000 images or some 365 CDs.

Featuring a red-and-black colour scheme, the drive measures 73.70mm x 22.20mm x 16.10mm and Kingston has done away with the cap-less design in favour of traditional lid.

The good news is that the DataTraveler 310 comes bundled with Password Traveller security software, a five-year warranty and is available at a suggested retail price of just £605.50. You could get a decent SSD for less, but look at the bright side, it's almost £50 less than the erstwhile DataTraveler 300.

The question is though, how big is the £600+ USB pen market? Other than a marketing toy it really is quite pointless.
