Corsair has moved to expand its prospective audience with the launch of its Power range of economical, quiet and energy-efficient power supplies.

The California-based manufacturer states that the engineering know-how that comes from developing high-end units such as its HX1000 has allowed it to create a "best-in-class power supply for mainstream users".

At launch, the Power series kicks off with a solitary 400 watt model, the CX400 pictured below, but additional models are expected at a later date.

The CX400 promises to deliver greater than 80 per cent efficiency ratings, and a thermally-controlled 120mm fan keeps the unit cool and quiet. Despite the promise of "features usually reserved for premium power supplies", the CX400 is sorely missing modular cables and opts instead for extra-long sleeved cables.

That minor omission, however, can be forgiven thanks to the very-low MSRP of $59.99 and the backing of a three-year limited warranty. Corsair claims the Power series offers an inexpensive and high-quality solution to those who don't require high-power units, and the CX400 slots in nicely below the VX450.

Corsair lists the CX400's key features as follows:

  • Supports the latest ATX12V v2.2 standard and is backwards compatible with ATX12V 2.01 systems.
  • Rated up to 400W of continuous power output at 40ºC
  • Extra long fully sleeved cables to support full tower chassis and assist with flexible cable routing.
  • Ultra-quiet 120mm double ball-bearing fan delivers excellent airflow at an exceptionally low noise level by varying the RPM in response to temperature.
  • High efficiency topology to ensure energy savings.
  • 99% Active Power Factor Correction provides clean and reliable power to your system.
  • Universal AC input 90~264V automatically scans and detects the correct voltage. No more hassle of flipping that red switch!
  • Dedicated single +12V rail offers maximum compatibility with latest components
  • Over Current/Voltage/Power Protection, Under Voltage Protection, and Short Circuit Protection provide maximum safety to your critical system components.
  • Standard ATX PS/2 size: 5.9"(W) x 3.4"(H) X 5.5"(L); 150mm(W) x 86mm(H) x 140mm(L)
  • MTBF: 100,000 Hours

and the CX400 slots in nicely below the well-regarded HX520.
surely it should be ‘slots in nicely below the VX450w.’?

This has me scratching my head a bit. Isn't the HX1000 made by CWT (yes, the same people who made my £28 XClio PSU), not Corsair? In fact, aren't all of their previous models made by either CWT or Seasonic?

I'd love to know how that allowed Corsair to create a best in class power supply.. if indeed they have even created this one.

So in fact it's not even made by the same people who made the HX1000! What a confusing press release.
