Belkin has today launched its Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit, and claims it to be the world's first set of Powerline Networking adapters capable of achieving speeds of up to 1,000Mbps.

The Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit, pictured below, is powered by Gigle Semiconductor's mediaxtream chip and promise speeds five times quicker than the theoretical 200Mbps offered by current Powerline adapters.

Belkin reckons the kit will provides enough bandwidth to make it "ideal for online PC gaming and ultrafast high-quality transmission of multiple video streams".

Sounds useful, but readers should be aware that mileage with Powerline adapters will vary depending on factors such as distance, interference and building materials. We'd be willing to bet that speeds of 1,000Mbps won't ever be reached, but we're very interested in seeing just how quick Belkin's kit can go.

The Gigabit Powerline HD Starter Kit, consisting of two plug-and-play Gigabit Powerline adapters, is available now in North America at a cost of $149.99. Belkin expects European availability in August.

Will be awesome if its true - as I already have a set of 6x 200mb homeplugs dotted around my house…file copy between pcs on plugs on opposite sides of the house max out at 20mbytes/s….so if these have some form of new compression technique to get better speeds, il be a happy camper. Will see what reviews etc say first, but so long as they break the 160mbit/s threshhold il be interested…
Very interesting, i use a variety of home plugs in my house - they are the best things since sliced bread. I can stream 1080p content from my pc to my 360 with no problems.

Would like to see how fast these things can go.
I have no end of trouble getting decent wireless speed and consistency in my student house. Of course my 6 housemates complain to me when they have problems.

I have rigged up a repeater system so that everyone seems to be happy (I use a cable to the router of course) but we still have an issue in what we call the faraday kitchen.

I was thinking of trying some 200mbps models to penetrate this wifi blackspot (mobiles don't work well either). Whats the best price/quality product? I wonder if its worth waiting for these and paying the extra for peace of mind in the future.
No way you could simply wire a repeater to stream wifi in the kitchen from the router? If your kitchen really is acting like a faraday cage, stuff should still transmit within it even if it can't get out!

Might be cheaper than homeplugging…
been looking to get a home plug for a while, looks like im holding off again. until the price of the legacy ones drops or this one shows fast it really goes
