Borrowing liberally from the Transformers movie, Foxconn was keen to point out the display-flexibility of its Intel P45 F1 motherboard, shown below.

Knowing that the upcoming P45 chipset supports CrossFireX - AMD's multi-GPU technology - and up to four teamed GPUs under Windows Vista, a quartet of Radeon HD 3850 cards was plugged into the board's four PCIe x16 slots, which run at x4 electrically in this configuration. Then the cards' dual DVI outputs were fed to eight displays.

Remember that to gain eight concurrent display outputs, the cards function individually, that is, in non-CrossFire mode.

Quite why the average person would need eight displays is a matter of conjecture but the facility's there if you need it.

What would you do with an eight-display setup. We'd love to hear your thoughts.

It is, but it's a good showcase. 4x PCEe x16 (mechanical at least) and 4x PCIe x1 as well as 2 PCIc.

Personally I'd love it if enthusiast motherboards came in these sort of sizes (without requiring server hardware). Plenty of space to put everything exactly where you want it. Perhaps if multiGPUs take off big time it'll happen.
