Looks like Sony is about to expand its range of netbooks with the introduction of the VAIO M series.

There's no official word from Sony just yet, but the unannounced netbook has made an appearance on the virtual shelves of Tesco Direct, priced at a tidy £299. And don't forget the 598 Clubcard points, too.

The 10.1in VAIO M, given model number VPC-M11M1E/B, appears to be a cheaper alternative to Sony's existing line of VAIO W netbooks.

At the heart of the system resides a 1.66GHz Intel Atom N450 "Pineview" processor, complete with integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics and joined by 1GB of DDR2 memory. A 250GB hard disk provides decent storage capacity, and other features include both Wireless N and Bluetooth connectivity, and a Sony Motion Eye webcam.

Unlike the VAIO W series, Sony doesn't appear to be kitting out its VAIO M netbooks with high-def screens. The 10.1in system pictured above offers a netbook-typical 1,024x600 resolution and comes equipped with Microsoft's Windows 7 Starter operating system as standard..

Tesco reckons you'll be able to get your hands on a VAIO M later this month, so a official Sony launch must be imminent.
