Following the official unveiling of Google's Chrome operating system late last month, we've been waiting for system manufacturers to pledge support for the freeware software, and it looks as though Acer will be one of the first.

According to Chinese newspaper Digitimes, Acer chairman J.T. Wang has confirmed that the company will launch the "first" Chrome-based netbook in the second half of 2010.

That's roughly when Google expects its Chrome operating system to be released, and Acer's showing of support should come as no surprise as the company - one of the world's largest computer manufacturers - already has a history of working closely with Google. Earlier this year, Acer became one of the first major manufacturers to introduce a Google Android-based netbook to the market in the form of the Aspire One AOD250.

Don't want to wait until late in 2010 to try Google's attempt at an operating system? You may not need to, as Chromium - the open source development version of the Chrome OS - is already available, and Google has recently published a list of compatible hardware, making it easier to identify potential problems before you get started.
