NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460: launch-day pricing and availability

NVIDIA's Fermi architecture has come of age with today's introduction of the mid-range GeForce GTX 460.

Launched in two flavours - 768MB and 1,024MB - the cards are now appearing at retail priced anywhere between £150 and £200, making them noteworthy alternatives to AMD's ATI Radeon HD 5830 and 5850.

The lesser of the two GTX 460 models - equipped with a 768MB frame buffer and a 192-bit memory interface - is available to buy at launch, albeit in limited quantities.

At the time of writing, only the ASUS model is available from a selection of the above-listed retailers, with prices starting at £168.55. However, consumers willing to wait for other manufacturer cards to filter through could snap up a GeForce GTX 460 for as little as £152.

Speaking to numerous retailers, we expect stock of other cards to become available in the very near future - if not later today.

Our pick of the duo, the 1GB card equipped with a wider 256-bit memory interface, is notably harder to track down. At present, none of our listed retailers show available stock, although there is a hint at availability later in the week.

As expected, pricing for the GeForce GTX 460 1GB will start at around £180 for a stock-clocked model, with factory-overclocked cards fetching anywhere between £190 and £210.

It's certainly a prettier launch-day picture than GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 in terms of pricing and availability - but is NVIDIA's latest rendition of Fermi enough to tempt you into making a purchase?
