NVIDIA has made available its latest GeForce driver release - version 197.13 - and has offered an apology to any users who "experienced quality issues" with the preceding version, 196.75.
Just weeks ago, the company's 196.75 driver was found to be potentially lethal to GeForce GPUs due to an error which caused graphics card fans fail to run at the required speed. The problem led to users of NVIDIA's own support forums reporting GPU temperatures exceeding 100°C.
NVIDIA promptly removed the driver, and recommended its users roll back to a prior release.
Today, the GPU giant appears to have identified and resolved the issue with a new driver package, version 197.13. Available for Microsoft's Windows XP and Windows 7 operating systems, the new release is said to "resolve fan speed issues reported with version 196.75 drivers".
Commenting on the release, NVIDIA states that it "apologises to our customers that installed the 196.75 driver and experienced quality issues".
"For the small number of customers that did experience problems, in almost every case reverting back to our 196.21 driver immediately resolved their issues. We continue to work closely with our add-in-card partners and PC manufacturers to help resolve any additional customer issues not solved by reverting to the earlier driver," said the company in a statement.
