NVIDIA has today expanded its Quadro range of workstation graphics cards with the launch of the range-topping Quadro FX 5800.
The card, dubbed by NVIDIA as the most powerful professional graphics card in history, features a massive 4GB of graphics memory and up to 102GB/s of memory bandwidth.
It'll provide 240 stream processors, which leads us to believe it's based on the GeForce GTX 280 GPU, but it's specifically refined to be "ideally suited for oil and gas exploration, medical imaging, styling and design, and scientific visualisation", says NVIDIA.
The Quadro FX 5800 is capable of fill rates in excess of 52 billion texels per second - that's more than double what the previous high-end Quadro FX 5600 could achieve.
Jeff Brown, general manager of Professional Solutions at NVIDIA, said:
"The size and complexity of data is growing at an exponential rate. The challenge for today's professional is to make sense of the mountain of data by distilling it into a form they can comprehend, analyse and use to make impactful decisions. At stake can be billions of investment dollars, or even people's lives. The Quadro FX 5800 has advanced features to allow massive datasets to be viewed beyond traditional 3D enabling professionals to make fast and accurate decisions."
So what does the cream-of-the-crop in terms of professional graphics solutions cost? $3,499, and it'll be available from PNY, Leadtek and Elsa.
