PRESS RELEASE

HGST Receives Commvault Software Compatibility Certification; Delivers Object Storage Solution with the Best Cloud Backup TCO to Resellers Worldwide

SAN JOSE, Calif. and TINTON FALLS, NJ., September 29, 2015 – Helping the world harness the power of data, HGST (@HGSTstorage), a Western Digital company (NASDAQ: WDC), today announced that HGST’s Cloud Infrastructure Business entered a strategic relationship with Commvault (NASDAQ: CVLT), a leader in enterprise data protection and information management. Commvault Simpana software, with native configuration and management support for the HGST Active Archive System, delivers a backup solution that solves data management at scale and provides instant access to data archives all at a price point that rivals traditional tape.

“Traditional storage arrays, which often leverage RAID technology, hit serious limitations at scale. Object storage solutions, like the HGST Active Archive system, overcome the challenges of protecting massive capacity environments where traditional backup is often not an option. Object storage provides several innovations to help accomplish a more robust and bulletproof ecosystem for data center environments that need to maintain instant access to archival data,” said Scott Sinclair, storage analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “The combination of HGST Active Archive and Commvault Simpana software provides a very compelling solution for an active archive tier in the enterprise ecosystem.”

Key Solution Benefits Include:

  • Lowest cost per terabyte for cloud-scale data backup
  • An archive environment that seamlessly grows to multi-petabyte scale
  • Instant access to data, overcoming the limitations of traditional tape backups

"HGST and Commvault have created a joint technology alliance for HGST and Commvault’s data management platform. HGST has become a fully qualified technology partner that has been validated, tested and supported by both parties," said Don Foster, senior director, office of the CTO at Commvault. "Customers now have access to the HGST Active Archive System in conjunction with the data management intelligence that Commvault software provides to meet access, retention and archive management goals."

“Our relationship with Commvault provides a new level of scale and protection, so our customers can better handle the demands of massive data growth, flat budgets and limited IT resources,” said Barbara Murphy, vice president of Marketing, Cloud Infrastructure Business Unit, HGST. “In certifying our HGST Active Archive System with Commvault’s Simpana software suite, customers have access to a highly affordable, simple-to-scale object storage system that beats the economics of traditional cloud infrastructures and provides enterprise-class backup.”
