DrayTek have announced the launch of a new book for Network Managers and Systems Administrators; Real World IPv6.

IPv4 is the numbering system we all use for the Internet. It gives us addresses like but with only 32 bits in the address space, all of those addresses have now been allocated to ISPs or users. Time has run out and it's only kludges like NAT which have prevented disaster previously. IPv6 is the new numbering system and protocol for the Internet.  IPv6 massively increases the number of available IP addresses and eventually every Internet will be using it whether you're a huge enterprise or a user at home, running a huge network or a single games console.

IPv6 presents many considerations for the systems administrator. There are specific business benefits but also issues to be considered on support, rollout, timescales, compatibility and network topology. All of these issues will affect businesses and it's essential that network managers become aware of these issues in order that their own  transition is smooth and non-disruptive.

Real World IPv6 is designed to introduce the concepts from the point of view of the network manager. IPv6 is a huge topic with deep technical aspects but the book focuses on introducing the key aspects that SysAdmins need to know to understand the implications and make the right decisions for the business. In drawing up the content, we've thought hard about what a typical DrayTek customer needs to know. The book deliberately avoids taking apart RFCs and protocols - things which you simply don't need to know in implementing IPv6. Instead, the book is concise, easily digestible and, importantly, up-to-date. In a constantly moving landscape, IPv6 practice and even the associated protocols have evolved.

The book, whilst published by DrayTek, is manufacturer agnostic with the concepts equally applying to other manufacturers. It is available as an ebook now from Amazon (for Kindle), Apple iBooks and most other ebook retail platforms. More details are available from
