SWINDON, UK, 1st August, 2003 - A busy team of lecturers and classroom assistants from Southall and West London College will be working from Leicester Square on the morning of Friday 1st August in a bid to prove that working on a computer needn’t confine you to a stuffy office building. Instead they will be working in the open air from state-of-the-art wireless notebooks based on Intel® Centrino™ mobile technology. The team of workers won this unique opportunity by entering a competition on a London-based radio station.

As part of Intel’s summer-long ‘Intel Inside® Your Life’ technology roadshow, the company has set up a wireless working space within Leicester Square allowing the competition winners to work as if in a fully functioning office – yet with none of the confines.

The Southall team who work with students with learning disabilities will be making the most of this relaxed, open air office as they currently work in a cramped portacabin on their college campus. They will spend the morning doing research on the Internet to prepare for lessons.

A complete office environment has been transported to Leicester Square, including desks, lamps, plants and even a tea lady! In addition, Intel is providing deckchairs, a paddling pool and parasols to create the ideal outdoor office.

The ‘hotspot’ infrastructure required to allow people to work wirelessly for this event has been provided by Broadreach Networks under the ‘ReadytoSurf’ brand and ISP Virgin.net.

The Institute of Employment Services has predicted that that the number of wireless workers in Europe could reach as many as 27 million by 2010*, meaning that happenings like today’s in Leicester Square could soon be common-place in the UK’s public spaces.
