CAMBRIDGE, England, March 6, 2003 -- Intel announced today the opening of Intel Research Cambridge, a laboratory where Intel researchers and university staff will collaborate on open research projects to accelerate the convergence of computing and communications. Specifically Intel Research Cambridge will focus on new networking, systems, and software development technologies to enable new types of distributed systems.

“The Intel Research Cambridge laboratory supports our vision of Proactive Computing, a world where millions of tiny wireless devices, embedded throughout the environment, work together to anticipate our needs and proactively act on our behalf. For these billions of networked devices to positively impact the way we live, work, learn and play, we need to understand how they should be designed and organized,” said David Tennenhouse, Intel Corporate Technology Group Vice President and Director of Research. “This will require a cross-disciplinary investigation, involving extensive prototyping of networked systems and applications in a variety of settings. The broad range of research capabilities at the University of Cambridge provides a rich collaborative environment for Intel and university researchers to explore this future.”"The establishment of Intel Research in Cambridge is a very welcome development. I look forward to interaction between Intel and the University in general and the Computer Laboratory in particular. We have really landed on our feet here: a technological relationship with a world leading company who sees the benefit of putting research results in the public domain," said Professor Ian Leslie, University of Cambridge.

“I am very pleased that Intel has chosen Cambridge to be the location for their newest laboratory. It is important for our University to be involved in taking R&D forward to the cutting edge. The collaborative nature of this lab will help us achieve that,” said Prof Sir Alec Broers, Vice-Chancellor University of Cambridge.

Intel Research Cambridge will provide facilities for 20-25 Intel scientists, and an equal number of university faculty, graduate students, and visiting researchers. The lab will be directed by Dr. Derek ‘Mac’ McAuley, an affiliated lecturer at Computer Laboratory, University of Cambridge and founding member of the Microsoft and Marconi research labs in Cambridge. Intel Research Cambridge is initially focusing on the challenges of delivering the capabilities of new communications and networking technologies to applications developers. This will include fundamental networking research, from mathematical modeling of network traffic to emerging technologies such as optical switching. The Cambridge lab joins three other Intel labs at Universities in Seattle, Berkley and Pittsburgh to make up the Intel Research Network (http://www.intel-research.net)

Intel Research in EMEAElsewhere in Europe, Intel Labs Barcelona located at the University Politecnica de Catalunya campus is focused on proprietary research and development in the area of microprocessors. Additionally, Intel’s Labs in Russia are working to build a world class Intel R&D operation with both technology research and product development capabilities. Spread between Moscow, Sarov and Nizhny Novgorod, Intel R&D has an operation of over 200 employees and contractors all working as a linked entity.

Intel, the world’s largest chip maker, is also a leading manufacturer of computer, networking and communications products. Additional information about Intel is available at http://www.intel.com/pressroom.
