BEIJING, CHINA-July 28, 2003-AMD (NYSE: AMD) announced today that it has reached an agreement with Dawning Information Industry Corp. Ltd. of China to include Dawning's plans to use the AMD Opteron(TM) processor to build the fastest supercomputer in China. The Dawning 4000A supercomputer is planned to run at maximum speeds in excess of 10 trillion operations per second, or 10 Tflops. It is also expected to be the first supercomputer made in China to be considered among the most powerful in the world.

Coupling the AMD Opteron processor's outstanding performance, 64-bit capabilities and powerful, highly scalable design advantages with Dawning's strength in research and development, the Dawning 4000A project represents the first IT industry effort in China to build one of the world's most powerful supercomputers. More than 2,000 AMD Opteron 800-series processors are planned to power the system with planned memory capacity to be up to 2256GB, or 2.256 Terabytes. The AMD Opteron processor is the only processor in the world capable of supporting a large, centrally located 64-bit computing resource while being compatible with existing 32-bit applications and the commodity desktop PC infrastructure. End users for supercomputing in China include scientific research institutes, commercial establishments, private enterprises, and computing centers.

"Drawing on AMD's leading edge AMD Opteron processors and Dawning's team of world-class research and development engineers, we expect to usher in a new era of supercomputing technology and innovation in China," said Marty Seyer, vice president and general manager of AMD's microprocessor business unit. "AMD believes in providing customers true benefits, highlighting our customer-centric innovation. AMD Opteron processor-based systems are revolutionizing the server industry. This project demonstrates the synergy that can be achieved when two powerful companies combine their strengths."

"The Dawning 4000A supercomputer will play an important role in promoting the development of high-performance computing networks in China," said Li Jun, president, Dawning Information Industry Corp. Ltd. "AMD's launch of the AMD Opteron processor was a watershed moment in the global IT industry. Its high performance, 64-bit capabilities and use of open standards are paving the way for the rapid enhancement of the performance of Chinese-made supercomputers."
"The development of the Dawning 4000A supercomputer based on the AMD Opteron processor truly represents a milestone in the history of supercomputers in China," said Shi Dinghuan, secretary-general of the Ministry of Science and Technology. "We are very excited to see that local Chinese enterprises like Dawning are actually 'turning the fruit of scientific research' into industrial products to the benefit of many. We are happy to see their rapid emergence in the world of science and technology and winning honor for the country."

The project has also won the support and recognition of the Ministry of Information Industry and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and AMD is committed to working to obtain any necessary U.S. government approval to participate in this project.

About the AMD Opteron Processor

The AMD Opteron processor for servers and workstations, which extends the x86 instruction set architecture (ISA) to 64-bit computing for the first time, is also the first processor in a new class of computing called AMD64. AMD64 follows the evolutionary path of the industry standard x86 ISA, allowing development of a unified 64-bit computing infrastructure fully compatible with the pervasive x86 architecture. The AMD Opteron processor is the highest performing 2P and 4P server processor, according to industry standard benchmarks.

About AMD64

AMD64 defines a new class of computing by extending the industry-standard x86 instruction set architecture across 32- and 64-bit platforms. AMD64 is an AMD innovation designed to deliver full compatibility with existing 8-, 16-, and 32-bit x86 solutions and simultaneous industry-leading 64-bit performance. The AMD Opteron processor for servers and workstations is the first processor in this new class of computing. AMD plans to introduce the AMD Athlon(tm) 64 processor for desktop and mobile personal computers in September, which will allow pervasive adoption of the AMD64 architecture. AMD64 replaces terms such as "Hammer" (now, "AMD64 technology") and "x86-64 ISA" (now, "AMD64 ISA").
