Bracknell, UK, April 9th, 2003 - DellTM today announced that it has provided Domino's Pizza (UK & Ireland), the world leader in pizza delivery, with a complete store hardware refresh to enable it to cope with business demands. The new IT infrastructure will enable the company to maximise customer and shareholder value with systems that are scaleable, reliable and robust enough to meet the demands placed on the business both today and in the future.
Domino's Pizza is using Dell's flagship enterprise, networking and desktop products including PowerEdgeTM Servers, OptiplexTM desktop PCs and PowerConnect switches.
A typical Domino's Pizza store has between six and 10 desktop computers and monitors, and a PC and server in the back office. This set-up is now being updated to include the following:
* Dell PowerEdgeTM 1600SC Servers with integrated drive
electronics (IDE) redundant array of independent disks (RAID) and Intel Xeon dual processing capabilities;
* Dell PowerConnectTM 2016 switches with simplistic plug and
play functionality and basic workgroup connectivity;
* Dell OptiplexTM SX260 and GX260 desktop computers and 15?
and 17? monitors supporting the latest Intel Pentium 4 Celeron chip technology in a small form factor;
* Dell Silver Service with 24/7, four-hour same business day
response 1
* Microsoft® Windows® 2000.
By spring 2003, 80 per cent of stores in the UK and Ireland were running the new Dell system. More stores - which are a mix of franchises and corporately owned - are expected to make the move in the near future.
"If a computer fails, everything stops and it ends up costing a lot of money as queues increase and business is potentially lost. So far, the reliability rate of Dell's equipment has been more than 99 per cent, which is absolutely brilliant," said Marc Halpern, Head of IS at Domino's Pizza. "Dell has gone out of its way to help us meet business demands, and that's just the kind of partner we need."
Prior to the IT overhaul, Domino's Pizza stores ran a DOS-based point-of-sale (POS) application on a mix of new and old hardware. This led to service glitches and slowed business. As part of the project, the company upgraded to Microsoft® Windows® 2000.
Halpern continued, "In terms of cost benefit, Dell was leaps and bounds ahead of the nearest competitor because of the value proposition it could offer us. Products have to stand the test of time and Dell's technology also blew everyone else out of the water from this standpoint."
Paul Bell, President, Dell Europe Middle East and Africa commented, "Dell's high-quality enterprise products are a natural fit for businesses like Domino's Pizza where speed, reliability and flexibility are everything. A company's success is driven by service they offer their customers. The new Dell infrastructure has enhanced customer service levels by removing downtime."
Dell's relationship with Domino's Pizza has been so successful that it is likely to be extended to other areas of the business. By the end of 2003, it aims to equip store inspectors with Dell's new Axim Pocket PC - a project previously ruled out due to the excessive costs of alternative solutions.
