Going rogue

Back in January we brought you the codename of Imagination Technologies' next generation of embedded GPUs - Rogue. Then at MWC we informed you that the lead licensee of Rogue is ST-Ericsson. Today Imagination released a bit more information about Rougue, but not much.

The broad prediction is that the POWERVR Series6 GPUs will deliver ‘unrivalled GFLOPS per mm2 and per mW for all APIs' - in other words the best performance in a given area of silicon and a given power envelope.

Added to that we have a couple of other names licensees and three more anonymous ones. It comes as no surprise to see TI jump on-board and it' like ST Ericsson, will be combining Rogue GPUs with ARM Cortex A15 CPU cores sometime in the not too distant future. Also named was semiconductor outfit Media Tek, which is more of a CE player.

"The growing commitment of the primary players to our roadmap shows that, having evaluated the options, the overall mobile and embedded market is increasingly committing to POWERVR as the de facto graphics standard," said Imagination CEO Hossein Yassaie.

One of the unnamed lead partners, surely, is Apple. Both the A4 and A5 have used POWERVR GPUs and there's no reason to think future ones won't stick with this option. Apple will never formally announce these details and Imagination certainly wouldn't risk incurring Apple's wrath by doing so, but we're probably looking at the GPU that will power the iPad 4 - or whatever - in 2013.
